Button Flowers

I have posted about these before, cute button flowers my sister Linda makes.  Her version are 7inches or so long built on florists wire and in a vase.  These cuties are done on a much smaller scale and their "vase" is a wooden spool.  How cute are these?
We think they would also be cute with vintage fabric wrapped around the spool..........the possibilities are endless.

Flanders' fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row

Land of the free because of the brave.  Memorial weekend is upon us, laying flowers on the graves of our loved ones and all who fought for our Freedom.  I love this poem.  Have a great weekend everyone.

You Go First

You go first.............how many leaps of Faith do we take in a lifetime?

Corn Cakes

A good alternative to heating up the house to bake cornbread is corn cakes.  Around our house we love beans and cornbread, really a staple for us ( as you can see Mr. Outdoors likes his with hot peppers) and so healthy too.  I found the corn cake recipe on line and will be using it again for sure.  Lots of bad storms last night and tornados everywhere in Kansas and Shawnee, Oklahoma was hit very hard, they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Idaho potatoes...yes please

It's been a very warm Saturday here in Kansas, not complaining mind you but still warm.  Canned 17 pints of potatoes today, bought them for 10 cents a pound a week ago and am just now getting around to getting them canned.  We sure do enjoy them, already cooked and ready to fry mash or add to our stew.  They sure were huge, came from Idaho.

Monarch Pass has snow this evening........

Tulips

Traveling the countryside from our farm to our sons home in the country west of us is a beautiful arboretum.  The tulips there are truly amazing!  Normally in Kansas by the middle of May the tulips are long gone, not so this year.  We have had such a cool spring and the flowers are staying on ever so much longer. Aren't they lovely.  Around the farm we have lily-of-the-valley, iris and red rockets in bloom,  roses are thinking about it.  Love this time of year.....80's in the daytime and 60's at night....such good sleeping weather!

Quilt as you go

Been working on a blue and white Irish chain quilt.  Reproduction blue cherry fabric with rose and blue finishing strips.  It is king sized to fit our bed with very substantial batting and white solid blocks between 9 patches.  I prefer to hand quilt my quilts but anymore there aren't enough hours in the day for that.  Got the mowing all done this morning and the iris, lily of the valley and forget me nots are all in bloom.  Hung out our laundry (70 degrees today) and it is fluffy and dry...smells heavenly.  Chocolate chip cookies in the oven this evening...a surprise for Mr. Outdoors when he gets home from town.  Fantastic Friday!

Terrific send off

Our Grandson is moving to Colorado.....boohoo.  His Dad and his significant other had a great going away party for him Saturday.  We had so much good food, smoked ribs, brisket, chicken and sausage with all the trimmings potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, fresh vegetables, fruit salad and rolls.  I won't even go into the desserts!  Our family has some terrific cooks and our son does a excellent job of smoking the meat.  The day was complete with a roaring fire in the outdoor pit, we had a high of 43 degrees so the fire was so great.  Grandson is 22 and living his dream of moving to Colorado, he will be close to our home in Colorado so we will be seeing him soon.

Clematis arbor

Loving this garden gate arbor of clematis in purple.  Our spring is terribly delayed and I am itching to get in the garden and yard.  Spring has to be around the corner....fingers crossed here!  Special Saturday!

Baby moose

Baby Moose up on Spring Creek Pass, Colorado taken last week during a snow storm.  How cute is this?  We all are wondering about this crazy weather and I bet the animals are too!  We were 84 degrees @3pm yesterday and dropped to 34 degrees overnight.  A 50 degree drop.   Beginning to wonder if we will ever get the garden planted.  Thoughtful Thursday.

May Day

Happy May Day!  As a young girl growing up we always made May baskets from construction paper and filled them with flowers and candy for the neighbors.  We also wound many a May pole in our childhood days.  Sad that these customs have fallen by the wayside. Our first day of May here in Kansas is more of the same strange weather we've been having.  The afternoon temperature was 84 degrees and in the last hour has fallen almost 20 degrees, we have snow in the forecast for tomorrow night.  We still haven't planted our tomato and pepper plants we have sitting in the south windows and they are sure getting "leggy".  Hopefully this is the last cold spell and we can finally move forward with springtime!
